Continuing Education: Submission of 3.6 CEUs or 36 hours (1.8 CEUs or 18 hours for phlebotomists) of continuing education documentation that meets NCA requirements.

Re-examination: request a current fee schedule and Candidate Handbook. For certificants who do not meet requirements for the ACTIVE status, an additional option is available to transfer certification to INACTIVE status for a one-year period for $40.

The Board of Directors has implemented an EMERITUS status for those certificants retired from the field of clinical laboratory science. When certificants apply for EMERITUS status this allows them to remain "on-file" with NCA and continue receiving the Clipboard and other informative mailings. A $150 one time fee will assist with the expenses of postage and staff time. (This status is not to be used in place of INACTIVE status which is used to provide a certificant more time to obtain the needed continuing education.)

NCA accepts continuing education earned through a variety of avenues. These may include (but are not limited to): Approved CE Programs; College or University Coursework; Teaching Activities; Papers, Publications, Books and Exhibits; NCA Self-Assessment Examination (SAE); Leadership and Other Activities. Copies of certificate(s) of program completion are acceptable documentation. For in-service hospital training please submit your education on the Continuing Education In-Service Documentation Form signed and dated by your supervisor.

NCA mails recertification information and applications to all certificants approximately six months prior to their expiration date. Individuals who recertify by continuing education or by examination are recredentialed for a three-year period. In response to certificants' requests, the NCA has designed Recertification Certificates that are now available. The certificates are $5 and will state that the National Credentialing Agency certifies that you have recertified competence through continuing education. The certificate will include your credential, original certification date, date of recertification and what date your recertification is valid until.

If you do not receive recertification materials two months prior to your expiration date, please contact the NCA office. NCA will not grant extensions or waive the reinstatement fee because you did not receive reminder notifications. Notifying NCA if your address changes is the certificant's responsibility.

New Recertification Policies
The NCA Board of Directors in its continued commitment to excellence, approved two important revisions to its recertification policies.

Inactive Status - Revision Effective January 1, 2006
The second change that the NCA Board approved was a change in policy for individuals who transfer to inactive status. Effective, January 1, 2006, individuals may not hold inactive status for consecutive years. What this means is that individuals whose credentials are inactive in 2005 may not apply for a second year of inactive status in 2006. These individuals must activate their credentials by either continuing education or re-examination.

Lapsed Status - Revision Effective January 1, 2007
1). Re-examination will be required to achieve active status if an individual's credential has remained in a lapsed status for more than five years. Any individual who has let his/her active credential expire and has not recertified within the most current five year period either by continuing education or re-examination, must re-take the current examination in order to achieve active status for the credential held.

This revision will be effective beginning January 1, 2007. NCA has always required recertification in order to maintain an active credential. With this change, NCA will continue its commitment to excellence by ensuring competency of individuals by requiring re-examination.
